NR105vcx: Comprehensive Community Development in Places

In this course you’ll explore how your organization’s work affects the broader community and how to deepen your impact through place-based comprehensive community development (CCD). You’ll learn to assess geographic data, understand the legacy of historical policies, and coordinate across programs and partners to improve quality of life. You’ll visit a local organization using CCD strategies and use a self-assessment tool to evaluate your organization’s approach. Whether you work in a rural, urban, or tribal setting, this course equips you with the language, tools, and strategies to lead meaningful, place-based change.

Come Prepared for the Course

This faculty-led course takes place over four weeks and includes up to a 90-minute weekly live web conference session, self-paced online assignments and the use of peer discussion forums. Learners should expect to spend approximately four hours per week on course related reading and assignments. All required coursework is due by 11:59 p.m. PT on the designated day of class.

Your Instructor

Alys  Mann

Alys Mann

Alys Mann is the principal of Alys Mann Consulting, LLC, assisting non-profits and municipalities with housing market research, neighborhood revitalization, strategic planning, and more. She began her career at Home Headquarters, Inc., and later directed housing efforts for the City of Syracuse. Alys holds a BA in policy studies and geography from Syracuse University and an MPA from Baruch College.She started her career as a planner and then as the Director of Neighborhood Planning and Property Redevelopment at Home Headquarters, Inc., a nationally respected nonprofit community development corporation serving Syracuse and the surrounding region. She then was the Director of Housing for the City of Syracuse where she managed efforts to deal with that City’s stock of foreclosed and abandoned properties, neighborhood revitalization efforts, and annual CDBG and HOME allocations.   She holds a BA in policy studies and geography from Syracuse University, where she also served as adjunct professor teaching neighborhood revitalization, housing policy, and GIS skills. She holds a master’s in public administration degree from Baruch College in New York City.
